Guide to Face Shape and Hairstyles

Ever heard you should tailor your eyebrows or hair cut according to your face shape? Well, you're correct! But, how on earth do you know what your face shape is and why is it important?

Knowing the shape of your face will help you pick the most flattering makeup and hairstyles for your face shape. Knowing this key bit of information will help you wield your makeup brushes, wear your sunnies, and style your locks so much more confidence.

But how does it work? Well, you can look at your face and then compare it to the diagram below.

Or you can take some quick measurements and figure it out the mathematical way. I opted for the measuring since I tend to think I am oval, but could also be round.

Here’s how it works.

  1. Use a regular ruler (not a tape measure) and measure the entire length of your face from hairline to chin tip. (A)

  2. Now divide that number by 3 (B).

  3. Next, measure from underneath your nose to the tip of your chin (C)

- If B is greater than C, then you either have a long or a square face.

- If B is less than C, then you either have a round face or a diamond face.

- If B an C are equal, or close, then you either have a heart shaped face or an oval face. If your chin is pointy, then you are heart shaped. If your chin is round then you have an oval shaped face

Now that you know your face shape, choosing a hair cut will is so much simpler!

Choosing the right hairstyle

Square Face Type

You want to play down your stronger jawline if this is the case.

Some of the best looks for your face type include:

  • Curls, choppy ends, and shag haircuts which will look gorgeous

  • Super short haircuts and short haircuts with edgy cuts are very flattering. But you have to have the personality to wear them with grace

  • Long layers that start at the jawline, and continue downward will also look beautiful on you

  • Long bobs are an excellent choice as they soften the jawline

In the same time, try to avoid one-length bob hairstyles and wide, blunt bangs.

These styles will further highlight your angular features.

Round face shape

If you have a round face shape, the goal with your hairstyle is to make your face appear longer and leaner than it is.

And at the same time, less round.

You can do this by creating less volume around the face with the following hairstyles:

  • Bobs, especially cuts that fall just below the chin

  • Gentle, soft, and graduated layers typical for the shoulder-length hairstyle that makes your face slimmer and removes bulk and weight from the sides

  • Long bangs or side-swept bangs that project an appearance of extra length

Styles you want to avoid are the one-length and blunt cuts, such as the classic bob for those with short hair.

If your hair is longer, curly and short hair is not your best choice.

Consider growing your curls up to shoulder length. It is best to avoid short hairstyles, as they do not look good on you.

This especially applies to pixies and edgy short styles.

Oval face shape

The good news for people with oval face shape is that they can pull almost any look.

Be it short or long, wavy or straight, they all look good on you.

What you need to consider is highlighting your best feature.

  • If you want to highlight great bones and gorgeous bone structure, go for an angular bob showing off your chin

  • If you want to highlight your eyes, go for side-swept bangs that draw attention to the eyes

  • And for those with long waves, try the long and beachy waves

  • The only thing you need to avoid is short layers that add height on top of your head.

Long (oblong)

You need to make sure the hairstyle does not drag down the face and make it even longer.

What you want is to add width.

Bangs are your best friends as they can hide your long forehead

  • Bobs of any length are ideal, with chin-length being the best. They create an illusion of width

  • Curls and waves are always welcomed, as they also add width to your face

  • What you need to be careful is long hair, as it can draw down the face

  • Stay away from extreme

Heart Shaped

The heart-shaped face is a curvier version of the inverted triangle type.

The heart shaped face is distinguished from inverted triangle by the fact the heart-shaped has a widow’s peak.

Great hairstyles for this type are:

  • Pixie cut;

  • Long bangs;

  • Long bob;

  • Deep side part.

The diamond face is actually considered the rarest among all face shapes, and it sometimes looks like the heart shape because of the pointed chin. The main difference? The cheekbones are wide. For this face shape soft, side-swept bangs are great since they help hide your narrow forehead while lobs and hairstyles that fall straight to the side of your face help emphasize the jaw and chin and “camouflage” your cheekbones.

  • Side swept bangs work well with diamond faces. Long and/or deep side swept bangs also work. They cover the forehead partially, so the length of the forehead is well hidden and its width increases. They also help frame the eyes by bringing lateral focus to the face.

  • Middle partings make a face look longer. So, avoid them. Also, don’t add height to the crown as it adds length to the face.

  • Don’t try thick blunt bangs. They tend to accentuate the cheekbones. Since the cheekbones are the widest in a diamond face, you don’t need them to look any more full.

  • You have to be careful with long straight bangs. They look good when they’re feathered at the center, but full long straight bangs are not a good option.
