Friday Favorites: Foundation
I am an eyeshadow fanatic. Seriously, I have just about every shade that Senegence makes, have all the Naked Palettes, an array of Bobbi Brown and my most recent obsession Beauty Counter. I just love mixing and playing with color on my eyes. But foundation, well, that’s a whole other story.
My skin at the moment is normal to dry (and more in the dry side during the winter). It is also prone to redness and hormonal acne flare ups. Oh, and did I mention that lovely discoloration due to years as a teen in the tanning bed? So, when it comes to foundation I am a tad, well, picky. I need:
Matte-ish- Anything super dewy just makes me look sweaty in the Texas humidity
Coverage – I want that airbrush flawless not wearing any make up look without the airbrush price
Stays in place- I have no time at all for foundation to be melting off my face or cracking in my fine lines
Here are my favorite foundations that fit my bill.
1. Wear to Work/daily - Becca Ultimate Foundation. Ya’ll this is full-coverage, water-resistant foundation that stays put. It heavy enough to even out my skin tone, but does not look like I’ve cakes clown makeup on my face. It’s pretty pigmented so it does not look water-down. And at $42 it’s not bad on the purse. It lasts forever so I am ok with the investment.
2. Stay all Day – Make Up For Ever matte velvet skin. This used to be my go-to daily until I found Becca, but I admit I still love this one. It is very pigmented so it gives great coverage, but I have never found it to be too much. It comes in over 40 shades so you can find one that truly matches. I also love that it is oil free and really feels lightweight but provides the coverage I love. And its only $38.
3. Weekend Wear – Beauty Counter’s dew skin. My schedule on the weekend normally includes teaching dance to toddlers and preschoolers, errands and the occasional birthday party, so this is perfect. Beauty Counter is a safer option for those of you who want to incorporate safe items in your beauty routine. Dew Skin is a tinted moisturizer with SPF 20. It is all I wore during our beach vacation and it provides enough coverage to go out on the weekend without scaring any little children. I love the ways it smells and just enhances the skin. $45.
4. Drug Store Bargain – Maybelline New York SuperStay - The pigment-rich formula is oil-free, lasts all day, and glides easily onto skin, which is why it took home a 2018 Best of Beauty Award for the best full-coverage foundation. And at about $8, it can’t be beat.
No matter what foundation you use, color matching is the key. I also have two-shades for my daily wear makeup (one for summer and one for winter). I also then tend to mix the two when I am in between seasons and had a little glow left from summer, but not full on. Do not be afraid to mix shades. Also, if you get your foundation from Ulta, Sephora or the cosmetic counter at your local department store, have them give you small samples so you can try the colors at home. And if you buy a full size and it doesn’t work, take it back! Yup, you can take opened makeup back if it does not work. The last thing I want is $42 sitting under my sink because I was afraid to simple go back to Sephora and say opps this did not work for me.
So, what about you? What is your go-to foundation?
