Turn Your Workout into Play
If you dread getting in your workout, stop! No, I’m not suggesting you give up on getting or staying in shape and turning into a couch potato. What I am suggesting is that you change things up and stop thinking of it as working out. Instead, think of it as playing. And playing to stay in shape can take many different forms.
Make Walking Fun
If you’re getting tired of your daily walk, consider taking someone along with you. It’s a nice way to break up the routine and have someone to talk to while you walk, or not when they fall asleep….
Another good option is to download an audiobook or your favorite podcasts and listen to them while you walk. It makes the time go by much faster and you might learn a thing or two along the way.
Play a Sport
There’s a reason they call it playing a team sport. Think about what you like to do and find a team around your neck of the woods. Think softball, volleyball, kickball is huge near us and the likes. Or how about tennis or golf? Join a bowling league or find some ladies and start stroller strides.
Not only will you get a great workout, you’ll also get to hang out with a fun group of people that love to play and make working out a lot more enjoyable. Team sports not your thing? No biggie, get out and throw the ball with your kiddos, play a little hop scotch or even hide and go seek.
Try Different Workout Classes
If you’re a member of a gym consider taking a few different workout classes. The goal is again to find something you enjoy that feels more like playing than working out. Who knows, it could be the yoga class you haven’t tried, or maybe you find your love for belly dancing.
If you don’t want to join a gym, try Class Pass. You get access to the best workout classes and studios with one membership. It allows you to sign up and take classes all around town or even when you’re out of town. Creating your own custom workout schedule is easy — no extra accounts or log-ins needed. It is a great way to see if you like something before you commit.
Go For A Hike Or A Bike Ride
The weekends are the perfect time to take your workouts to the great outdoors. Get the family together and go for a hike or a long bike ride. You can fit a whole lot of working out into one of these outings and spend quality time with your kiddos and loved ones at the same time. Of course the added benefit is beautiful scenery and plenty of sunshine and fresh air.
Splash Around In The Water
Let’s not forget about playing in the water. Who doesn’t like to splash around? Look for a local pool, a lake or if you’re lucky enough to live close to the beach head out for a swim in the ocean. Swimming itself is a great low impact workout, but it doesn’t stop there. Water balloon fights, hosing down the car, running through the sprinklers are all fun ways to get moving.
So, how do you make working out fun?
